Come on Down

I've lost count of the number of years we have been a Local Presenting Sponsor for the Komen Race for the Cure. This year is the 20th Anniversary of the Amarillo event and as usual we will be there. Breast cancer is a horrible disease that has affected many of our patients, their families, and our own friends and families. We have made a commitment to support breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment. I have a bias towards supporting cancer research since if we don't have the research to lead to treatment advances, what is the use of education and screening? This year, Komen will invest another $50-$60 million into research, with about $20 million targeted to cancer vaccines and other cancer prevention strategies.

It’s important that an organization attached to a cause actually accomplish something, not just be an outlet for “feel good” activism. One does get tired of all the “green-washing” and “pink-washing” and “what-ever-color-washing”. You know, the “if you buy this pink stapler for $20 we will donate 1 cent ” kind of washing that is really cause based marketing without much real benefit to the cause itself. I admire the Susan G. Komen Foundation because they keep tight control over their affiliates and sponsors to assure that their organization is not used as just a prop for companies marketing efforts. Sometimes the rules are a pain—Yes, I am looking at you SGK—but necessary.

So once again we will be one of the Local Presenting Sponsors for the Greater Amarillo 20th Anniversary Race for the Cure , two weeks from today, on Saturday September 25.

We will be in our tent, if we can get it to hold together for one more year, at the EXPO starting at 8 am. Come by and get one of our most popular FREE Race giveaways, Perfecting Hand and Body Moisturizer. And Join Us for a fun and worthwhile day.
