What is Juvederm Voluma XC?
Juvederm Voluma XC, approved by the Food and Drug Administration, is the only filler approved by the FDA to be used to add volume to the cheeks. Like other dermal fillers, this product also provides smoother skin, reduces lines and wrinkles, and gives the patient a more youthful appearance. It gives a very subtle and natural-looking lift to their cheeks by adding a small amount of volume and contouring. Patients 21 years and older with loss of volume in the mid-face are good candidates for Juvederm Voluma XC. Results appear to last longer than other hyaluronic acid fillers, with improvement seen for up to two years. Risk of side effects includes transient bruising, lumps, swelling, tenderness, itching and redness.
How it Works
Juvederm Voluma XC is hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally-occurring substance in the skin. As a hydrating substance, it plumps up the skin leaving it youthful and smooth. As women and men age, sunlight exposure and other environmental factors reduce the HA in the skin. Injections of Juvederm XC bring back that youthful plumpness. Patients can return to normal activities by the following day.
Safety Concerns
Side effects of this non-surgical and non-invasive treatment are mild and last about a week or so, or up to four weeks in some patients. Patients with severe allergies to bacterial proteins, lidocaine or have a history of anaphylaxis should avoid this treatment among others. Patients are also advised to avoid alcoholic beverages, exposure to sun or high heat, and strenuous physical activity for 24 hours following the treatment.
